History of Sea Pines
Modern Hilton Head Island would be nothing without the vision of Charles Fraser and in 1957 he and his brother Joseph B. Fraser Jr, and their father serving as chairman of the board, Sea Pines was formed. With an office in a trailer at what is now the Sea Pines Circle they started designing a community including roads based on paths from the plantation days. Many of the brightest of that generation (including landscape architect Hideo Sasaki creating a master plan) were brought in to help build a resort like none other. With buildings blending into the environment they also built beach paths that run every few streets so while everyone has easy access to the beach and once on the beach you still see mostly dunes and trees versus hi-rises. Inviting the world’s best golfers in 1969 to a course that was finished as the Heritage Golf Tournament got started, Arnold Palmer helped with publicity by winning and showing the world Hilton Head. Finances have gone up and down and the 80’s where particularly rough, a legal team was brought in to rebuild and create 2 organization Sea Pines Associates and Community Services Associates (CSA) which runs security, property and roads. Riverstone Group bought the Sea Pines Resort in March of 2005 and recently has put in over 75 million in upgrades of facilities with much more planned.
